Wellune is a sleep tracking and improvement app that helps users understand their sleep patterns and make informed decisions to improve their sleep quality.
However, It has been demanded that functions are needed to improve main screen content and increase retention. Thus, user research revealed several pain points that hindered the user experience.
User testing with five participants revealed significant usability issues including difficulty finding information, understanding data, and taking action to improve sleep, ultimately impacting user satisfaction and retention.
Users expressed frustration in locating specific data points or features within the app. Common pain points included unclear menu structures, inconsistent terminology, and difficulty navigating between different sections of the app. This resulted in increased task completion times and user dissatisfaction.
Also, Users struggled to interpret the presented data, leading to misconceptions about their sleep patterns and overall health. Issues included complex data visualizations, lack of clear explanations, and difficulty comparing data points over time. This hindered users' ability to derive meaningful insights from the app.
Despite access to sleep data, users reported challenges in translating insights into actionable steps to improve sleep quality. The app lacked clear guidance, personalized recommendations, and support mechanisms to facilitate behavior change. This resulted in low user engagement and limited adoption of sleep improvement strategies.
Hypothesis: By implementing a more intuitive and hierarchical menu structure, users will be able to locate information more easily, reducing search times and increasing overall satisfaction with the app.
To solve the problem that users were confused by the overlapping information and ambiguous menu names of existing [home] and [trend] menus, the user experience was improved by focusing on today's sleep score on the home screen and providing more detailed analysis results by separating sleep and breathing in sleep analysis.
Hypothesis: By using appropriate visualizations and providing clear explanations, users will be able to better understand their sleep data and gain valuable insights.
It was difficult to grasp the difference in data due to similar graph design, and the user's understanding was low due to simple numerical provision. After the improvement, various graphs suitable for data characteristics were used to improve visual understanding, and intuitive UX was implemented by providing comparative analysis results with the user's previous data.
Hypothesis: By offering personalized sleep improvement recommendations and tracking progress, users will be more motivated to adopt healthy sleep habits and experience better sleep outcomes.
I've transitioned from a data-focused to a solution-oriented UX. Instead of simply providing sleep data, we offer actionable insights and personalized recommendations. By incorporating expert analysis and tailored advice, we empower users to take control of their sleep health and work toward long-term wellness.
This project provided invaluable insights into the iterative design process. I found the experience of formulating hypotheses, crafting designs to address those hypotheses, and then validating them through user testing to be exceptionally rewarding. It reinforced the importance of a user-centric approach where design decisions are grounded in data and user feedback.
I was particularly struck by the significance of UX writing in shaping the overall user experience. While the visual elements are crucial, the clarity and tone of the written content significantly impact how users perceive and interact with the product. This project highlighted a gap in my skill set and has motivated me to dedicate more time to honing my writing abilities.
